Was in San Diego this morning and I saw something fairly exciting; I saw an M edition 535i. I find it exciting because I own the older yet unknown 533I. I couldn’t get any pics because it was in a left turn lane and I was going past it. But it was the usual dark blue/black colour they come in and was in amazing condition from what I saw. The person washes (probably waxes) it, still has a beautiful coat of paint and the leather interior didn’t look a day old. Even if it did have an M badge slapped on it, the car is in such a great condition I would still be impressed. Speaking of fake badges, this keeps showing up in the exact same spot near one of my favourite locally owned donut shops.

That painters tape seems to be holding up well.

What M car is that? I don’t recognize it. (Joke)

Just realized I didn’t blur the plates, oh well, I trust most of you guys not to be creeps or something like that.

Possible it was a 535is? They never sold the E28 M535i here, although it is possible to import those now.

I owned a grey market M535i 14 years ago.

so if this particular car you saw looked like this one the ///M badge is real.

I didn’t see it, the original author saw it. Nevertheless that is a pretty awesome car, I wish the ones here had retained the styling elements, bumpers, headlight, etc. I knew they had put M badges on some of the early non-M models.

That’s why I kind of think it isn’t a real M car. It had the usual M badge and immediately following was the 535I badge. Either way, still an impressive car.

I figured he’d see it so I posted.

Memory escapes, but I think these things were created for the South African market. M suspension bits, the appearance package and a choice between the “green” U.S. spec motor or the Euro spec. I love euro bumpered BMW’s of this era....and I do miss this car.

I also think this was the only car to ever get the M badge without an M engine.

According to BMW M Registry they were made for both the European and South African market. I’m not sure what you had to do to get an M badge for your car from the factory, I know they put them on a couple different cars including an e30. This is off an E30, part number 72601933569.

If it looked like the one MonkeyB ST posted, then it’s possibly real. The Euro bumpers would be a good indication. I wonder how many of them have been imported to the states.

it very well could be an M535i, if it looked like that photo I posted it’s probably real. Not sure when this registry was last updated, but it has all the info. http://m535i.org/

There’s a really clean E28 M5 down there with the M-Technic kit, it’s been repainted dark blue. Pretty famous car, it’s got well over 300,000 miles but is perfect.
